GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN – Plans are moving along for Grand Haven’s newest microbrewery – the Grand Armory Brewing Company.

Founders Ben Tabor and Ryan Andrews, report they are on track to open the Grand Armory Brewing’s taproom in the historic Armory building, probably in late summer. The 110-year-old facility at 17 S. Second St. is located in the heart of Grand Haven’s historic downtown business district.

After receiving initial approvals from the City Planning and Community Development Department in March, Tabor and Andrews are finalizing plans for the taproom and an off-site brew-house on Airpark Drive.

“Ben and I first developed our interest in craft beer while we were attending Western Michigan University,” said Andrews, a resident of Spring Lake. “My brewery visits in Dublin, Ireland, Tokyo, Japan and Portland, OR were also very influential in my love for brewing and craft beer. Traveling to different breweries helped me acquire a strong appreciation for the art of brewing. Ben and I reconnected in Grand Haven and we’ve been brewing together and refining our recipes for several years – recipes that feature historical styles and well-crafted beers.”

The taproom at The Armory will have 20 taps offering many styles of ales and lagers, as well as wine, hand-crafted ciders, and old fashioned sodas. “We want the taproom to have a comfortable atmosphere that preserves elements of the Armory and features scenes from Grand Haven’s history,” said Tabor, a resident of Grand Haven.

“First and foremost, our mission is to delight our customers with great tasting craft beer. As part of that mission we also want to support sustainability within the beverage industry. Our green values include using local products and organic ingredients, promoting composting and recycling, and plans for solar assistance at the brew-house.”

In the spirit of sustainability, Grand Armory Brewing is taking part in developing a cooperative relationship to share space in the Armory building with three other local businesses with green values – Righteous Cuisine, Aldea Coffee and the Armory Art Center.

Along with the delicious food and high-quality coffee, the Armory Art Center plans to offer “Sips and Strokes” classes in painting and poetry, and display a revolving art gallery in a special events area. The special events area may also be available, through Grand Armory Brewing, for business meetings, rehearsal dinners, private art classes, beer club meetings and other uses.
